West Roxbury, Mass.— An MVP duo from Catholic Memorial School headlined a list of four CM student-athletes who earned All-Scholastic recognition during the winter season.
The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald both selected Kurtis Henderson, the Catholic Conference MVP for basketball, and Charlie Nascimben, the Catholic Conference MVP for swimming, for the newspapers’ prestigious end-of-season recognition.
Meanwhile, hockey goalkeeper Dom Walecka earned All-Scholastic recognition from The Boston Globe while Kevin McCarthy represented the hockey team for the honor in The Boston Herald.
The four All-Scholastic student-athletes also belonged to the list of 16 CM student-athletes who earned Catholic Conference All-Star honors this winter season.
“I’m incredibly proud of all our student-athletes for the hard-work, dedication, and character they exhibit in games, practice, and the classroom,” said Craig Najarian, CM’s Athletic Director.
For Kurtis, his latest accolade marks his second consecutive All-Scholastic appearance in both newspapers. Kurtis, a junior from Brockton, became the 13th Knight to score 1,000 points in a varsity career when he scored 33 points for the Knights in their 76-53 win over St. John’s Prep in January.
This past season, he led the basketball team (16-6) to a share of the Catholic Conference title before losing to BC High 55-50 in the D1 South Sectional quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Charlie, a College of the Holy Cross commit, makes his first All-Scholastic appearance after winning the first State Championship in the history of CM’s swim team. A senior from Needham, Charlie set the MIAA State Meet record for the 100-yard Breaststroke (57.21 seconds).
“Charlie is a coach’s dream,” said Mr. Patrick Murray.
“He has achieved great things in the pool because of his incredible work ethic and competitive spirit. More important than any athletic quality, he has made the CM Swim Program better because of his kindness, sincerity, and thoughtfulness.”
Dom and Kevin, the All-Scholastic hockey duo, led the CM hockey team (9-8-6) to its first Super 8 State Tournament in six years this winter. A sophomore from Stoughton, Dom posted a .944 save percentage and a goals-against average of 1.44 during the regular season.
On the wrestling team, Kyle King and Luke Orup finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively, in States. At Sectionals the week before, Orup and King both finished second in their respective weight classes, turning plenty of heads in the process.
Kyle, a sophomore, and Luke, a junior, both earned Catholic Conference All-Star recognition, as did junior Anthony Caruso.
Together, the trio hopes to improve their team’s 6-10 record when they return to the mat next winter.
