Athletic Director Craig Najarian Announces Hiring of Two Varsity Coaches

Mr. Craig Najarian, Catholic Memorial Athletic Director, announced on Tuesday the hiring of two varsity coaches. CM has hired Mr. Matthew Callahan as varsity lacrosse coach and Mr. Steven Goode as varsity wrestling coach. In addition to leading two of CM's fifteen varsity programs, Mr. Callahan and Mr. Goode will join the CM faculty.

Mr. Callahan joins CM from Brown University where he served as the assistant coach for the men’s varsity lacrosse program. Prior to joining the staff at Brown, Mr. Callahan coached at Tufts University helping guide the Jumbos to a National Championship in 2015.

"We're very excited to welcome Matt Callahan to the CM family," said Mr. Najarian. "Our collective goal in building our staff is to identify, attract, and acquire the best. This hire is another example of that mindset and approach. Matt brings an outstanding background and was a rising star in college lacrosse as a top assistant at Brown University. He will build a blue-collar approach for our lacrosse program that I believe is critical for our long-term success and our overall culture."

A 2013 graduate of Tufts University, Mr. Callahan received the William C. Stiles Memorial award from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) as the nation’s most outstanding defensive player as a senior. He was a USILA first team All-American in 2012 and 2013. He was selected by Denver in the second round of the Major League Lacrosse draft and played professionally in the LXM Pro Tour.

In addition to his B.A, Mr. Callahan holds a masters degree in history from Tufts University. He has taught previously at Buckingham Brown and Nichols. Mr. Callahan will teach social studies to students in grades 9 through 12.

Mr. Steven Goode will lead CM’s wrestling program and teach English and social studies in the high school program. Mr. Goode has taught humanities at Newton South High School and in the Boston Public School system previously.

Following the announcement, Mr. Najarian said, "I am thrilled to announce the addition of Steve Goode as the next head coach of the wrestling program." Steve's pedigree and reputation are unquestioned throughout the wrestling community. His passion and commitment to excellence is inspiring and I'm certain that approach will continue to be a hallmark of our program. His depth of experience and knowledge is hard to match and we are fortunate to have him here. I have no doubt that our program will thrive under his leadership as he builds upon our proud wrestling tradition here at CM."

Mr. Goode was the president of the Black Educators' Alliance of Massachusetts and has been affiliated with the Smithsonian Historical Society and Facing History and Ourselves. He earned a full scholarship to East Carolina University and later earned two masters degrees from James Madison University and Fitchburg State. Mr. Goode won more than sixty wrestling tournaments during his collegiate and post-college career. In 1990, Goode competed in the Rocuzzi International Freestyle Wrestling World Cup in Hungary, where he captured first place and was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. He placed in the top ten in the 1990 U.S. Freestyle National Tournament and challenged for a spot on the 1992 Olympic team. Mr. Goode was a very successful assistant coach at Boston University where he coached over forty national qualifiers, three All-Americans, and six team conference championships.

Following the announcement, CM's President Dr. Folan, said "Mr. Callahan and Mr. Goode join a varsity coaching staff that seeks to instill sportsmanship, teamwork, dedication, and grit in its student-athletes.  Both are talented educators who demonstrate outstanding character and will serve as role models and will take great pride in assisting in the development and personal growth of our student-athletes. The hiring of Mr. Callahan and Mr. Goode solidifies CM's philosophy of the teacher-coach model."

Mr. Callahan and Mr. Goode will serve as instructors at CM's athletic clinics this summer and begin their teaching duties in September.
