CM Speech and Debate Finishes Second at Lincoln-Sudbury Tournament
Another weekend, another feat: The CM speech and debate program finished second among the 37 schools who competed at Lincoln-Sudbury High School's speech and debate torunament last Saturday.
Sudbury, Mass. – On Saturday, the CM speech and debate program finished second among the 37 schools who competed at Lincoln-Sudbury High School's speech and debate torunament. Eight students finished first in their respective categories.
"I am very proud of the boys on the team. They have been working hard on their performances and making sure they can be the best they can be,” said senior Jacob Azzi, one of the team’s captains.
The team was led by another strong performance from senior co-captain Brendan Julian who was recently named an Academic All-American by the National Speech & Debate Association. In addition to Julian, fellow senior Paul Fantozzi finished first in the Impromptu category. Brendan and Paul were joined by six underclassmen whose performances earned them first place honors.
"[They've] accomplished so much; it was good to see the awards that they won,” said Nick Olwell, who finished first in the Program Oral Interpretation (POI) category.
In POI, students use selections from prose, poetry, and drama to create a performance around a chosen theme. Olwell’s composition is titled “The Labels That Will Never Define Us.” This was Olwell’s first top finish with this piece. He also performs in Declamation.
The team has enjoyed continued success this year with a seventh place finish at Yale University, tenth place at Dighton-Rehoboth, and third at St. Joseph’s Villiger Tournament.
Next weekend, the team will compete at Natick High School’s Holly Festival, which is the biggest tournament in Massachusetts.
“I am excited to see how their hard work pays off at the next tournament, the Holly Festival. I believe that we have the talent to win this tournament for the first time in CM's history," added Azzi.
CM has won back-to-back team state titles in Speech and Debate. With this year’s performances to date, CM will be in the hunt for another. The future looks bright with a talented group of underclassmen.
