CM Remembers Mark Bavis '88 and John Cahill '62

On the 16th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center, we pause to remember two members of the CM family who were taken from us. Mark Lawrence Bavis ’88 and John Brett Cahill ’62, lost their lives aboard United Airlines flight 175 when it struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

Mark Bavis was 31 years old.

Mark's death was a blow to the Catholic Memorial community, the National Hockey League, and all who knew and loved him. The Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation was established in his memory, borne out of Mark's devotion to young men and women willing to work hard in their pursuit of success.

By the time Mark joined the hockey team at Catholic Memorial, it was obvious to many that he was destined for a bright career. He and his twin brother, Mike '88, helped CM win three state championships in the late 1980s.

After graduating, Mark embarked on a successful career at Boston University, then played three years in the American Hockey League and two years in the East Coast Hockey League before coaching at Brown and Harvard. His big break came in 2000 when the Los Angeles Kings hired him as an assistant scout.

John Brett Cahill was 57 years old.

During his days at CM, John worked as a caddie at Marshfield Country Club, earning him a Francis Ouimet Scholarship. He graduated from Boston College in 1966, with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and then earned his MBA at Suffolk University.

Mr. Cahill joined the Xerox sales training department in 1967 and rose to become a senior executive manager in Boston, completing international assignments that took him and his family to Rio de Janeiro and England.

Today we pray for our brothers and all those innocent lives lost on September 11 — Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
