Garvey '23 Takes First at MSTCA XC Invite

Wrentham, Mass. — The hard workouts and long runs logged by the Catholic Memorial Cross Country Team paid dividends at the MSTCA Coaches Invitational Saturday at the Wrentham Developmental Center as multiple runners, including the seven members of the varsity team, shaved significant time off their personal bests.

John Garvey ‘23 led the way with a first-place victory in the Boys’ Large School Senior 5K that saw the CM harrier cross the finish line 26 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Brendan Wilder of Waltham. Garvey dropped nearly a minute off his previous best, finishing the course in 15:55. Dean Simmons ‘23 cut 20 seconds off his PR, placing fourth with a time of 16:39.

In the Boys’ Large School Junior 5K, Brendan McKinney '24 took 61st place and ran 19:03.6 while the Boys’ Large School Sophomore 5K featured two sub-19 minute performances from Zachary Vianna '25 (55th, 18:28.7) and Gavin Carey '25 (64th, 18:51.1). Rudolph DeMeo '25 finished in 105th place with a time of 19:22.9 and Owen Crowley '25 was 138th, crossing the finish line at 20:01.

Michael Upton ‘26 took 35th in the Boys’ Large School Freshmen 3K, finishing his last 3K race of the year with a time of 11:17.9, about a 37-second improvement on his previous best.
