West Roxbury, Mass.— The Catholic Memorial School community gathered online Thursday for its two virtual Final School Meetings.

The Final School Meetings, which consisted of a high school award ceremony in the morning and a middle school award ceremony and Mass in the afternoon, provided the entire CM community with an opportunity to say goodbye to its students online and to celebrate another year’s worth of accomplishments.

Given the circumstances surrounding the transition to online learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Assistant Head of School Mr. Brian Palm reminded students to celebrate the resiliency and grit they displayed from March to June.

“You should all hold your heads up high,” said Mr. Palm, Assistant Head of School.

“This was not easy. And yet, you made it.”

In the morning, the high school award ceremony began with the presentation of the Pursuit of Excellence Awards to the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes by Vice Principal for Grades 9-12 Mr. Karl Danso ’04 and Vice Principal of Academic Affairs Ms. Gloria Riley. These awards included the Pursuit of Excellence in the Discipline Awards and the Founder’s Award, annually presented to the student with the highest grade-point-average at each grade level.

Colin Bligh, of Medfield, earned the distinction for the freshman class, John Marcucci, of Medfield, for the sophomore class, and Giuseppe Presti, of Auburndale, for the junior class.

Members of the Academic and College Counseling Department also distributed their College Book Awards to members of the junior class.

In the afternoon, Fr. Wayne Belschner, Pastor of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Parish in Dedham, celebrated a virtual Mass before the beginning of the middle school award ceremonyAfterwards, Mr. Palm and Vice Principal of Mission Integration Mr. Kevin Durazo presented the middle school’s academic awards and special distinction awards.

These awards included the middle school Founder’s Awardspresented to 7th grader Andrew Bingham ’25, of Medfield, and 8th grader Jialin Chen, of West Roxbury.

At the end of both the high school and middle school award ceremoniesPresident Dr. Peter Folan addressed both student bodies. He congratulated the students on their hard work and dedication to their studies.

He also advised them to spend time in reflection this summer, insisting that students take pride in the resiliency and grit they displayed during the transition to online learning.

“I urge each young man to take stock in their life and to examine how much they’ve grown since the start of the school year,” Dr. Folan said.

“Be proud of your efforts and the time that you put in as a community, as you’ve all grown through this experience.”
