CM Hockey Wins 2022 Catholic Conference Championship
A 6-3 win over St. John Prep gave CM their 23rd Catholic Conference Championship.
Boston, Mass. — On a night to honor the seniors, it’s ironic that it was a freshman and sophomore who gave the Catholic Memorial hockey team the spark they needed against the St. John’s Prep Eagles, the state’s top hockey program.
With the Catholic Conference Championship on the line, a 5-1 defeat from early in the year still fresh in their minds, and a raucous student section all dressed in red cheering them on, the Knights produced the highest-scoring performance from any team against the Eagles this season, winning the program’s 23rd conference crown 6-3 Wednesday night at Warrior Ice Arena.
“It’s a great feeling,” Larry Rooney, CM head coach said, “I’m proud of the work these guys have put in. We’ve been through challenges this whole year…but we found a way to win.”
Prep had the early energy, forcing the Knights to play defense for the opening 14 minutes of the game until a rocket from the blue line by defensemen Michael Corbett ‘24 was tipped in near the net by center Tyler Hamilton ‘25.
If it was the underclassmen who found the spark, it was the seniors who kept things going. About 80 seconds following Hamilton’s goal, right-wing Joey Borelli ‘22 made the most of a loose puck near the neat to give CM a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Left-wing Evan England’s ‘22 extended the lead to 3-0 during a CM power play 3:30 into the second with a shot through traffic from the left circle, while Brendan MacNeil made it a four-goal game from point bank with 7:25 left in the period.
Prep cut the deficit to one with 15:25 left in the game, forcing CM to call time out and silencing the fans in attendance as the Knights were in danger of losing their once safe lead. The worry would be short lived as the Knights regrouped and the fan section again came alive thanks to two goals from Morgan Lenehan ‘25 on a shot that came by way of a neutral zone turnover by Prep with 12:43 left and a breakaway with 3:29 left put the game on ice.
“We kept at it with the game plan. The boys knew they had to keep moving the puck forward. We got some goal scores and it shows out there with Tyler Hamilton, Morgan Lenehan, Evan England, and Joey Borelli. I’m proud of them for keeping at it,” Rooney said.
In goal, Dom Walecka ‘22 had 28 saves on 31 shots.
With the win, the Knights are now 13-2-1 overall and 7-1-1 in Catholic Conference play. They are currently the top team in the New England Hockey Journal Top 15, second in the MIAA Power Rankings, and second in the Boston Globe Top 20.
The Knights will wrap up conference play Sunday at noon at BC High before finishing the season against Belmont and with the Cardinal Classic tournament in Springfield.
