Gemma, Freitas, and Wing Headline Spring All-Scholastic Honors
CM also boasts 12 conference All-Stars from the spring season.
West Roxbury, Mass.—The Boston Globe selected Catholic Memorial School junior Michael Gemma, senior Matthew Freitas, and senior Matt Wing for its annual spring All-Scholastic honors this week.
Michael, a pitcher for CM’s baseball team, earned Super Team honors from The Boston Herald and Catholic Conference MVP honors this past season too.
“It means a lot to me knowing that I get to represent CM with such prestigious honors,” said Michael, a Milton resident.
“I have bettered myself as a student and as an athlete here at CM because of the hard work put in by coaches, teammates, and teachers. The fact I’m able to earn this award in a CM jersey, and represent those people who have helped me along the way is very important to me.”
Gemma posted a 1.14 earned run average and posted a 5-2 record for the Knights, guiding them to the South Sectional quarterfinals of the MIAA tournament. He collected Catholic Conference All-Star honors alongside senior teammates Patrick Manning of Weymouth and JP Olson of Stoughton.
Matthew Freitas, a Weymouth resident who played goalkeeper and captained the CM lacrosse team, earned the PCA Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship and posted a .650 save percentage this spring. The Boston Globe selected Matthew, who suffered a right leg amputation six years ago, for its Para-Athlete All-Scholastic honor.
Committed to play at Williams next spring, Matthew earned Academic All-American honors from Eastern Massachusetts Lacrosse Coaches Association.
Nine additional CM students from three other sports joined Gemma, Olson, and Manning as Catholic Conference All-Stars.
Matt Wing, after his team’s second-consecutive appearance in the Division 2 state semi-finals, joined fellow rugby seniors James Dumornay of Roslindale, Casey Gervais of Canton, Sam Lindemann of Dedham, and Gerard McDermott of West Roxbury as Commonwealth Coast rugby All-Stars.
Matt scored 21 tries in his high school career. He will play at St. Bonaventure next year.
On the tennis team, sophomore Luke Esposito of West Roxbury joined senior Brendan Julian and freshman James Julian, both brothers from Needham, as conference All-Stars while leading their team to the Preliminary round of the Division 2 South Sectional tournament.
Senior Brian Stubbs Jr. of Randolph received conference All-Star honors in outdoor track and field.
