WINTER SPORTS ROUNDUP | WEEK-ENDING 1/2/19
It seemed unlikely that the Knight’s would remain undefeated after Newton North’s Ezra Pemstein banked-in a three, giving Newton North a 68-65 lead with 10.3 seconds left in overtime.
The Knights fouled on the ensuing possession but caught a break when Pemstein missed the first shot of a one-and-one. Senior Brendan Ryan drew a crucial foul on the rebound and went to the line with the Knights down three. He calmly sank both free throws to bring CM within one. On the subsequent inbounds pass, junior Spencer Aronson stole the inbounds pass, drove to the hoop, and scored on a soft runner as the clock wound down. Newton North was unable to get a shot off before time expired, giving CM an improbable overtime victory in the Garden City Tournament Championship by a score of 69-68.
For CM, Kurtis Henderson tallied 21 points, going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Free throws proved decisive in the contest. Senior Brendan Ryan sent the game into overtime with two free throws after the Tigers fouled him on an inbounds play with two seconds left in the fourth quarter. Juniors Spencer Aronson and Ikenna Azums contributed 10 and 11 points, respectively, in the Knights win.
It seemed as if CM was going to pull away multiple times. But, Newton North continued to stay in the game, converting on numerous Catholic Memorial turnovers.
Second chance points kept the Tigers in the game. Their ability to break the press was pivotal. Junior Tom Andreae, who scored 7 points in the contest, had a key put-back of his own to give the Tigers a one-point lead with 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
Newton North erased a ten-point second quarter deficit with the help of Senior Kyle Ray-Canada who led the team with 18 points. Senior captain Christian Negrotti finished with 12.
CM improves its season record to 6-0, while Newton North moves to 4-2.
