Brendan Julian Named Academic All-American by NSDA

The National Speech & Debate Association named CM senior Brendan Julian an Academic All-American on Wednesday afternoon.
West Roxbury, Mass.— Catholic Memorial School senior Brendan Julian earned Academic All-American honors from the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) on Wednesday afternoon, the latest accolade in a 2018-2019 season full of outstanding performances from CM’s speech and debate team.

Brendan, a Needham resident, ranks second among Massachusetts high school students in total cumulative points from speech and debate events. As of Wednesday, he has 1,416 points from over his four years of competition.

“Over the years, CM has taught me countless essential life skills as well as fostering in me a passion for public speaking,” said Brendan upon receiving the designation.

“Receiving this designation was possible because of the hard work and support of many people in the CM community, including faculty, staff, alumni, and parents.”

Less than one percent of the NSDA’s 141,000 student members receive the prestigious honor, according to the NSDA. The award honors students who earn more than 750 merit points from competitions, achieve high grade point averages and test scores, and possess outstanding leadership traits.

This year, Brendan serves as a captain on a CM speech and debate team that ranks among the top programs in the nation. After winning back-to-back state championships in 2017 and 2018, the team started the academic year right where it left off. CM recorded a top-10 finish at the historic Yale Invitational Tournament in September and took home first place at the Dighton-Rehoboth tournament in October.

Brendan proved a vital component of the team’s success every step of the way.

After winning an individual state championship for declamation in 2017 and another for impromptu speaking in 2018, Brendan began his senior year with an impressive semi-finalist finish for Dramatic Interpretation at the Yale Invitational Tournament.

“I would also like to thank the CM Forensic team captains and members who have helped me along the way,” said Brendan.

“Last but not least, I would like to thank Brother Cavet who has guided me and many others to success."

For CM’s speech and debate program, Brendan’s latest honor adds another accolade to an already polished 2018-2019 season. The team joined the exclusive NSDA 100 Club this past October in recognition for accumulating over 100 degrees over the course of the last academic school year.

The team resumes competition this upcoming weekend at the Lincoln-Sudbury tournament on Saturday, December 8.
