Speech and Debate Team Records Best Performance in Program History

Twenty-five competitors from CM won awards at the 59th annual Holly Festival at Natick High School on Saturday.
West Roxbury, Mass.-- The Catholic Memorial School Speech and Debate team logged its best performance in team history during the 59th Annual Holly Festival at Natick High School on Saturday, according to the team’s head coach.

Head Coach Br. Anthony Cavet said that twenty-five competitors from CM won awards during the speech competition, which hosted dozens of schools from across the state. Three of those competitors finished in first place for their respective categories.

Junior Ben Kimball won first place in two different categories. He won first place in Drama Interpretation and, alongside fellow junior Luke Esposito, won Duo Interpretation. The two duo contestants won the State Championship for the category this past June.

“In his first year-and-a-half, Ben was not an ‘apparent’ comedic talent,” said Br. Cavet.

“But when he and Luke won states as sophomores as a comedy duo, it became ‘apparent’ that he was.”

Br. Cavet said that Ben chose a comedy skit for his duo piece with Luke. Ben and Luke received coaching from leaders on the team in the weeks leading up to the Holly Festival.

Those same leaders enjoyed some success of their own at the festival.

Senior co-captain Rory Redmond won a category, taking home first place in Prose.

Fellow co-captain Marcus Gadsden earned second place in the Pentathon. In that same category, junior Nick Olwell finished third.

Their outstanding performances stunned Br. Cavet.

“I have no idea how Ben, Luke, Nick, or our senior tri-captains, Rory, Marcus, and Darius, found the time to coach themselves, coach others, put together a Multiple Reading and do a thousand other duties as captains and still enjoy spectacular outcome,” he said.

“I can't explain it, but I love watching the results.”

The Speech and Debate team competes next on January 8 at Newton South High School.
