The gift is the largest in school history and was made possible thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Hegarty '66, P'97, GP'24, '27, ‘30.
From the Office of the President:
Dear Catholic Memorial Community,
Catholic Memorial is proud to announce the largest personal gift in our school's history with a $2.5M pledge made by Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Hegarty '66, P'97, GP'24, '27, ‘30. The gift is designated towards endowed scholarships, ensuring that students from all backgrounds can access a CM education for years to come. President of Catholic Memorial, Adam Lewis calls the gift a landmark demonstration of confidence in the direction of the school from an alum who believes in the outcome of its mission. "Tim and Mary’s love of this school isn’t only seen by the generations that have gone here and currently are here, but through their commitment to Catholic education with the faith that Catholic Memorial will continue transforming students."
It is no surprise that Tim and Mary Hegarty are life-long supporters of CM. Tim, who graduated in 1966, was followed by his son Mark Hegarty '97 who in turn was followed by grandsons Brendan McKinney '24, Liam McKinney '27 and Mark’s son Tim Hegarty ‘30. This pride is reflected in Tim and Mary's lifetime of generous contributions to CM, which have steadily increased over time. Among the more recent capital improvement projects which they have supported is the 2024 Baker Street entranceway plaza which will now bear Mary’s name to honor her steadfast support for the school.
Tim noted that "I've been very fortunate to have gone to this school which offered a challenging academic environment, while promoting Christian values as well as providing the opportunity to make lifelong friendships with some remarkable men.”
He added that “Over the years it has been gratifying to witness our students develop their potential as part of a diverse CM student body consistently achieving excellence in everything they do. As a past Board Chair and current member of CM’s Sponsors Council, I have seen CM evolve with the times serving an ever changing demographic while preserving important values such as brotherhood, spirit and character which more than justifies our confidence to continue to invest in the school’s endowment.”
Historically, Tim and Mary have been ardent CM fans, attending public speaking, cultural, religious, and athletic events. In recent years they have proudly looked on as their grandson Brendan matriculated to UVA after participating in track, Peer Ministry and the CM Scholars Program, and as his brother Liam provided leadership in Peer Ministry and as co-captain of both the state champion baseball ’26 and hockey ’25 teams and they look forward to a third grandson Tim’s success in the Scholars Program, Public Speaking, athletics and CMTV.
For CM's Board Chair, Kevin Costello '63, the Hegarty’s financial contributions and personal involvement in the school are indicative of the kind of alums and families within the CM community who understand the value which CM continues to provide to the young men it shapes and sends into the world. "It’s no surprise Tim and Mary have put their money and time where their hearts have been for so many years. I hope their generosity will show the way for others to help boys from all economic backgrounds have the opportunity for a CM education.“
CM prepares students for the rigors of college and beyond. While here, boys embark on service-learning opportunities, leadership development, and character formation programs inspiring them to become confident, courageous young men motivated to do good in the world.
Catholic Memorial, the Christian Brothers School of Boston, prepares boys for college, manhood and a world full of unknown challenges, ambiguity and complex problems and the importance of relationships.
