Twelve From Speech & Debate Qualify for Catholic Nationals

The 12 will represent the Boston Archdiocese at the National Catholic Forensics League competition in May.

Shrewsbury, Mass.
February 12 saw CM’s Speech & Debate team compete for a chance to represent the Archdiocese of Boston in Washington D.C. on Memorial Day weekend. And as this team is wont to do, they didn’t disappoint, garnering the largest number of speech slots of any school in the archdiocese. CM will send 12 speakers to the Catholic Nationals (NCFL) to represent the school and the Archdiocese. Aidan Healy, Sean Fay and Joe Cutting will compete in Extemporaneous. Will Masferrer and Johnny Cardarelli and Will Cummings and James Julian, all of whom medalled this weekend, in Duo will also compete as will Pat Blomberg, Graham Horowitz and Owen Galvin who cleared the bar in Declamation. And Chris Boensel and Samson Persson who qualified in Oral Interpretation will round out the team. Aidan Floyd, Aaron Crowley and Gerald Sewack are alternates in their categories.

And with Aidan Healy in Worlds Debate, Patrick Blomberg in Programmed Oral Interpretation, Brendan Galvin in Informative and Johnny Cardarelli and William Masferrer in Duo all heading to Louisville, KY in June to compete in National Finals (NSDA), CM will field two strong teams on two of the brightest stages. Before they compete, that matter of defending their Massachusetts state championship title (MSDL) is waiting in the wings. The Speech & Debate team will bring 40 strong to these April 9 finals held at the Acton-Boxborough H.S. and are looking to go from four titles in five years to five titles in six years. Many speakers have already qualified but for those needing a few more points pre-qualifiers will be taking place on March 5 and 19.

At the end of all this, there could very well be a truckload of hardware arriving at Baker Street. And according to their proud coach, Brother Cavet, noise will be made. After all, he should know, this past spring Br. Cavet was inducted into the National Speech and Debate Association's Hall of Fame
