Knights Take Top Spots at 60th CM Invite

Catholic Memorial
Boston, Mass. — A lot can change in two years and an individual win and a team victory by the host team at Saturday’s Catholic Memorial Invitational proved that.

After finishing 11th out of 12 teams at the 2019 edition of the meet, the 60th edition of the CMI saw the Knights top the Silver Division and score their second big meet win of the year. CM’s previous win came earlier this month in the MSTCA Bay State Invitational’s Green Division race. The Knights also earned a fourth-place finish in the Manhattan College Invitational’s E Division race a week before the CMI.

Junior C.J. Sullivan took first place in the Silver Division race win with his time of 16:31.4, nearly a minute faster than second-place finisher and CM teammate junior John Garvey. From the start Sullivan took the lead and refused to give it up, cruising through the first mile in under five minutes and passing the two-mile marker at 10:25.

The time was not only good enough to win his race, but bested the entire Red Division, which consisted of larger schools such as Lexington, Lowell, and Pinkerton of New Hampshire.

Garvey completed a one-two punch for the Knights, finishing in second place with a time of 17:34.5. Seniors Michael Bane and Joseph Connolly finished in seventh and eighth place with times of 18:13.0 and 18:30.4. Freshman Dereck Then wasn’t far behind with an 11th place finish and time of 18:52.7.

Eighth-grader Brian Wukitch was Catholic Memorial’s top finisher in the Boys’ Freshmen race. He finished in 39th place and ran the 3K course in 12:55.4.

The Knights have a dual meet against Malden Catholic on October 19 before kicking off the postseason with the Catholic Conference Championship at Powisset Farm in Dover on October 26.
