Prep No Issue For CM Football

DANVERS, Mass. — In what was supposed to be the regular season game of the year, the Catholic Memorial football team continued to dominate their opponents and proved once again that they are the undisputed team to beat in Massachusetts. The Knights (6-0) commanded all three phases of the game throughout their 38-9 victory over conference rival, the St. John’s Prep Eagles (5-1) on Friday in Danvers. 

 

The team continued to rise to the occasion as they picked apart the foe that defeated them in the last two Super Bowls at Gilette Stadium.  

 

Although CM’s lead was just 11 points at the end of the first half, a second half controlled by the Knights’ running game helped them pull away in the third. Two scores from junior Datrell Jones, and a passing touchdown from JC Petrongolo to Jaeden Skeete in the third quarter solidified their victory. 

 

Senior Kyle King found the end zone for a 1-yard score, and also contributed multiple tackles for losses and quarterback pressures. Joining him on the defensive line was senior Charlie Kettlewell, who recovered a key fumble early in the third. Kettlewell emphasized that it was great for the team to be able to defeat SJP on their home turf and play well against one of their biggest rivals. 

 

Senior Jack Sokol was able to convert on his first field goal attempt, seven games into the season. 

 

“I always root for the offense to score a touchdown but if they don’t, I’m always ready to go. [Attempting a field goal] is something that doesn’t happen a lot because we pretty much score touchdowns. It was nice to get a field goal and put some points on the board for our offense,” Sokol said.

 

For the Eagles, senior running backs James Guy and Ryan Grenier were the leaders in the offensive attack. Quarterback Jack Perry was able to repeatedly find his receivers on crucial downs, but the offense failed to find the end zone until the last play of the game. Victor Harrington, who was substituted in at quarterback, connected with junior wide receiver Stephon Patrick for the last-second touchdown.  

 

The Knights will look to remain unbeaten when they face Malden Catholic at home, Friday at 6 p.m.
