CM Football: Fast Start Slows Down St. John's HS

WEST ROXBURY, Mass. – The Catholic Memorial Football Team entered Saturday with a chip on their shoulder. Earlier in the week, the Knights were ranked 16th in the MIAA's Division 2 power rankings. Entering their game against St. John's (Shrewsbury), the team was out to prove doubters wrong.
“We just want to come out and play and prove to everyone that we are number one,” senior Kyle King said.
That mission was accomplished early on. After an 80-yard touchdown run from sophomore Carson Harwood, a blocked punt-turned-safety, and a 73-yard pass from J.C. Petrongolo to Kole Osinubi, the Knights (5-0) jumped out to an early 16-0 lead, en route to a commanding 44-0 win over the St. John’s Pioneers (2-3).
Petrongolo followed through last week’s strong performance at Bishop Hendricken with another steady day. He completed 8-10 in the air, tallying 169 yards and four touchdowns. He was able to share the wealth and find four different receivers for scores. Osinubi (3 receptions, 93 yards, 1 touchdown), senior Matt Rios (2,21,1), and sophomores Jaedn Skeete (1,27,1) and Mervens Amazan (2,28,1) were all benefactors of Petrongolo’s strong day behind center.
Despite being held out of the end zone, the Pioneers showed some bright spots. Sophomore running back Bobby Rodolakis led the team in the ground attack, contributing 52 yards on 15 carries. Quarterback Ryan Miller connected on nine on his 19 passes, totaling 50 yards. He was able to keep the ball away from the strong secondary of the Knights, something previous opponents were not able to do.
However, the Knights’ success on special teams was the deciding factor in this one. The Knights blocked two punts, including one by senior Shawn O’Connor. The blocks put the team in fantastic field position, eventually leading to paydirt by the offense, including a nine-yard run by sophomore Datrell Jones to put the team ahead 23-0 early in the second quarter.
The victory on Saturday marked the team’s first against an in-state opponent, after opening the season with four wins against out-of-state teams.
Now, the Knights turn their attention to the rest of the Catholic Conference, with all four of their final games against conference foes.
“Prep is who we have our eyes on and the date’s been circled on our calendar. This game will determine a lot. It’s really for all the marbles,” King said.

The team travels to Danvers to face St. John’s Prep on Friday in their biggest game of the season so far.
