Knights Dominate in Football Season Opener

West Roxbury, Mass — Playing in front of a packed crowd, the first in 654 days, the Catholic Memorial Football Team (1-0) did not disappoint. The Knights' success in all three phases of the game led to a dominating 44-6 win over Capital Prep of Connecticut (0-1) in their 2021 regular-season opener.
CM controlled the game from the start, building an unsurmountable 30-0 lead seven minutes into the first quarter. The Knights utilized their endless weapons on offense, as well as on special teams. Senior Devon Marshall returned a punt and a free-kick for scores in the first quarter. Junior Jaedn Skeete scored on both sides of the ball, including a 25-yard touchdown catch to open the scoring for CM. Skeete also returned an interception for a touchdown to put the Knights out of reach early. Junior quarterback JC Petrongolo connected on three of his four passes, two of those for touchdowns.
It wasn’t until the last play of the game that the Sharks were able to get on the scoreboard, with sophomore quarterback Jamon Mullens connecting with sophomore DeMarco Eady for the 16-yard touchdown pass.
CM’s strong defense was able to limit the Sharks’ offense, totaling five sacks, one interception, and a safety.
The Knights donned their special “Red Bandana” jerseys in memory of Welles Crowther, a graduate of Boston College, whose heroism at the 9/11 attacks 20 years ago continues to inspire. Welles was an equities trader and a volunteer firefighter who saved more than ten lives that tragic day.
The team met postgame with New England Patriots linebacker Matthew Judon, who made his team debut on Sunday in Foxboro. Senior captain Tom Crean said, “It was really special to the team to see such a high-caliber football player come to our game. To send a message as strong as he did regarding the importance of cherishing the moments really resonated with me in this last senior season.”
The inspiring words from Judon will spur the team on in their next game this Friday at home against La Salle Academy of Rhode Island.
