Owen McGowan Named to SI All-American Watch List
The Boston College commit received the distinction from Sports Illustrated when the magazine released its list of 1,000 national candidates on July 15.
Canton, Mass.— A Catholic Memorial School football player has been named to the Sports Illustrated All-American Watch List.
Owen McGowan, a Boston College commit from Canton, received the distinction from Sports Illustrated when the magazine unveiled its state-by-state list of candidates on Wednesday, July 15.

“This honor means a lot to me,” Owen wrote in an email.
“I was definitely a little bit surprised [by the honor] because I’ve always dreamed of being an All-American. To be named to the watch list brings me one step closer to that goal.”
Sports Illustrated named a total of 1,000 candidates from the nation’s 2021 high school recruiting class, according to the magazine’s website. This fall, the magazine will narrow its watch list to 250 finalists in October and then 99 finalists in November. The selection process will culminate in a final 25-member, All-American team later at the end of the fall.
Armani Reeves and Camren Williams are the last CM football players to earn All-American distinction.
Listed as a 6-foot-1-inch, 225-pound senior linebacker on his SI All-American profile, Owen also plays tight end for the Knights’ offense. During his junior season, he tallied 110 tackles and five sacks on defense and scored five touchdowns on offense. Both The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald named Owen to their respective All-Scholastic football teams after he helped guide the Knights to a second consecutive appearance in the Division 1 State Championship game.
The Globe also named Owen its Division 1 player of the year.
Owen credits the CM football coaching staff and Athletic Department for providing him with the resources needed to help improve his performance. This past spring -- when CM transitioned to online learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic -- the Athletic Department provided an innovative, digital training program on its website for all its student-athletes.
According to Owen, CM Athletic Trainer Mr. Jepthe Soulouque and Strength and Conditioning Coach Mr. Sam MacNicoll used the program to create a set of modified home workout plans tailored to the liking of a highly touted, national prospect. Owen applauded Athletic Director Mr. Craig Najarian for his leadership in overseeing the digital program and coordinating the efforts of both trainers.
Looking back on the hard work he put into his training this spring, Owen took solace in seeing his work pay off.
“For guys who hope and wish to be recognized, I would say one thing: hard work works,” Owen said.
“It’s all about holding yourself accountable. It’s difficult when there’s no one to push you, but those are the moments that matter the most, when no one is watching.”
When informed of Owen’s distinction, Mr. Najarian commended Owen for his latest achievement.
“I’m incredibly proud of everything Owen has accomplished on and off the football field here at CM,” he said.
“He’s had an amazing career and I know the best is yet to come for him. He’s a young man of high character, one who leads the locker room by the example he sets and he’s a true Knight.”
