Kurtis Henderson Joins the 1,000-Point Club

Kurtis became the 13th Knight to score 1,000 points in a varsity career after he scored 33 points for the Knights against St. John’s Prep on Tuesday night.
Danvers, Mass.-- The CM basketball team welcomed its newest member to the 1,000-point club on Tuesday night.

Junior point guard Kurtis Henderson became the 13th Knight to score 1,000 points in a varsity career when he scored 33 points for the Knights (7-1) in their 76-53 win over St. John’s Prep.

“Seeing how I’ve progressed from year to year just showed me how much of a role hard work has in it all,” said Kurtis, a Brockton resident.

“The accolade was never on my mind when I first got here. But, as I started playing, I kind of knew in the back of my mind that I at least had a shot at it.”

A Catholic Conference All-Star last year, Kurtis entered the game averaging 29.7 points-per-game this season and 982 points for his career. During his sophomore season, he averaged 24.2 points, 6.1 assists, and 5.3 rebounds per game and earned All-Scholastic honors from The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald.

CM head coach Mr. Denis Tobin never doubted whether-or-not Kurtis would reach the milestone.

“My question when I first saw [Kurtis] play wasn’t if he’d ever get to 1,000 points,” said Tobin.

“It was whether he’d get to 2,000.”

During his freshman season, Kurtis scored 200 points. He scored 500 during his sophomore season to put the 1,000-point summit in clear view entering his junior season.

Before Kurtis reached the 1,000-point milestone, the list of 1,000-point scorers at CM included Fran Costello ’69, Chris Donald ’06, Matt Droney ’12, King Gaskins ’72, Allen Harris ’09, Bruce Higgins ’93, Ronnie Perry Jr. ’76, Dan Powers ’12, Bill Raynor ’70, Guilien Smith ’15, Ron Teixeira ’65, and Brandon Twitty ’16.

Of those players, only Gaskins, Perry Jr., and Teixeira have ever scored over 2,000 points. Twitty, who now plays for Stonehill College, last reached the 1,000-point milestone before Kurtis.

“I think [Kurtis] can finish top-five all-time in CM scoring, right up there with some of the greats,” said Tobin, a two-time State Champion.

While acknowledging Kurtis’ scoring prowessTobin believes the point guard offers much more to his teammates as a leader.

“He’s got the best work ethic of maybe any player I’ve ever coached,” he said.

“[Kurtis] is extremely coachable and tries to do exactly what is asked of him. He’d developed into a fantastic leader.”

Tobin remembers a blowout win against West Roxbury last year when Kurtis scored only six points. He had scored 40 points in the game prior. Instead of expressing disappointmentKurtis kept his enthusiasm up and, “was happy setting up his teammates to score,” according to Tobin.

This season, Kurtis continues to lead by example. After hitting the milestone, Kurtis set his sights on a much larger goal—one for his whole team.

“I think it’s really fun to be in that category along with the other greats from CM who are right there too, said Kurtis.

This year, I really want to win the Catholic Conference this year and compete for a state title.”
