McGowan and Mitchell Named All-Scholastic by Boston Globe and Boston Herald

The juniors led the football team to its first Catholic Conference title since 1987. They join 15 other CM student athletes as conference all-stars.
West Roxbury, Mass.-- Two Catholic Memorial School student-athletes earned All-Scholastic honors from the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald in December.

Juniors Owen McGowan and Zach Mitchell received both honors for their performances during the Knights’ football season, which ended with an appearance in the Division 1 Super Bowl. Together, they headline the 17 Catholic Conference All-Stars chosen across CM’s four fall sports teams.

Owen, a Canton resident, earned Catholic Conference MVP and Division 1 Player of the Year from the Boston Globe. A Boston College commit, he also received a nomination for Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year. Looking back on his season, he credited his teammates for his success.

“These guys pushed me and competed with me every day to make me better,” said Owen, a captain.

“Every day in practice, my teammates held me accountable and made sure I was ready for Friday nights.”

At 6-foot-1 and 220-pounds, Owen played linebacker and tight end for the Knights. He recorded over 100 tackles and accounted for more than 700 all-purpose yards on offense.

Zach, a Weymouth resident, earned Catholic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He intercepted four passes and accounted for a forced fumble at the safety position.

“I think that my teammates playing so well together helped me to really focus on my position in the defense,” said Zach.

“Winning the award definitely motivates me for next season. We have a lot to look forward to and many goals that we still haven’t reached as a team.”

Despite losing in the Division 1 Super Bowl, the football team led all CM sports teams with 11 listed Catholic Conference All-Stars. Quincy Eutsay, Zachary Goodwin, Jamall Griffin, Darrius LeClair, Danny Lopes, Quincy Plumer, Barrett Pratt, Will Stockwell, and Shiloh White joined Zach and Owen on that list. Together, they led the Knights to their first Catholic Conference title since 1987.

On the soccer team, junior Ronan Greene, sophomore Ryan Larson, and junior Matthew Rotchford earned conference all-star honors too. They led the Knights to their second South Sectional tournament birth in the past three years.

Senior Shawn Barry and sophomore Jack Kelly represented this year’s conference all-stars on the golf team. Senior Sean Donohue earned the honor for the cross-country team.
