Michael Gemma Signs NLI to Northeastern Baseball

The 6-foot-4 righthanded pitcher from Milton caught the attention of Division 1 programs after winning Catholic Conference MVP during his junior year last season.
West Roxbury, Mass.—Catholic Memorial School senior Michael Gemma signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Northeastern University during an informal ceremony in the Ronald S. Perry Gymnasium on Tuesday afternoon.

Michael, a 6-foot-4 righthanded pitcher from Milton, caught the attention of collegiate programs after winning Catholic Conference MVP last season.

He signed his National Letter of Intent with CM Baseball Coach Mr. Hal Carey and CM Athletic Director Mr. Craig Najarian in attendance. His parents joined the ceremony too and posed for photos with their son.

“The athletics here at CM are really competitive and special,” said Michael.

“All my teammates and coaches motivate me and push me to be my best. They help me keep training harder and continue to get better. I’m really excited for my senior season.”

Last year during his junior season, Michael earned Super Team and All-Scholastic honors from the Boston Herald and the Boston Globe respectively. He posted a 1.14 earned run average and a 5-2 record on the mound for the Knights. That spring, the Knights finished their season in the quarterfinals of the South Sectional tournament.

“Michael made a tremendous jump from sophomore to junior year,” said Mr. Carey, who has coached Michael throughout his varsity career.

“He always had tremendous stuff, but his confidence really grew during his junior year. His greatest attribute is his humility. He acted the same way as Conference MVP as he did the year before.”

Outside of baseball, Michael plays on the varsity basketball team at CM and belongs to the National Honor Society.

When Michael enrolls at Northeastern next fall, he will join former teammate J.P. Olson on the Huskies’ pitching staff.

Michael joins Boston College football commit Owen McGowan as the first two CM student-athletes to commit to Division 1 programs in the past six months.
