2019 CM Spring Sports Digest
Our CM beat writer, Brendan Galvin '22, previews our six spring sports teams ahead of their varsity seasons. Give his preview a read and discover another reason to cheer on our Knights this spring!
Baseball:
Head coach Mr. Hal Carey and his squad looks to be aggressive this spring. Keep an eye out for the potent senior trio at the heart of the Knights’ lineup. The trio, comprised of catcher JP Olson, outfielder Tommy Fisher, and outfielder Pat Manning, promises to strike fear in the heart of any pitcher. On the mound, last year’s Catholic Conference MVP, senior Colin McGrath, leads an exciting rotation. Senior Max Mandel and juniors Michael Gemma, Mason Reed, and Paul Guiney will also get innings on the hill.

As a team, they will try and play smart baseball and focus on the fundamentals. On the base paths, their aggressiveness will put pressure on their opponents. Expect this team to be a contender in the Catholic Conference and fight for a spot in the Super 8.
Lacrosse:
Led by three returning players and six seniors, the team will try to play an up-tempo style by pushing up field in transition while playing an aggressive defensive style. Senior captain Matthew Freitas, a Williams commit, will start in goal after earning All-Scholastic honors last spring. Junior Zack Broderick, a member of the football team, is projected to start on defense and make a solid contribution to the team.
Watch out for breakout candidate, sophomore Will Stockwell, as well. Coached by Mr. Callahan, a former All-American lacrosse player at Tufts University, the lacrosse team will try to establish a strong, professional culture.
Rugby:
Rugby:
Leadership will be a crucial component for this team during the upcoming season. Led by eight returning starters and nine seniors, the team looks to build off their success from last season when they finished in the Division II State Semi-Finals. They will try to take advantage of their size by playing a power-style game. Watch out for Liam McGurran, Liam Borza, Henry Lindemann, Max Lustig, and Chris Yah-Valdez.
Senior Sam Lindemann, a Fairfield commit and Catholic Conference All-Star last season, expects to play a major role in the team’s attacking scheme. With a heightened level of commitment from his players this season, head coach Mr. Mort Sullivan expects a much higher level of intensity at practice and in games this spring.
Tennis:
A young core headlines the team this year. Only five starters return from last year and there are only two seniors on the roster. Keep an eye on underclassmen James Julian and Ronan Greene, who have both shown promise in practice. Julian has clinched the number one singles spot after going undefeated in challenge matches. Coached by former tennis player, Mr. Johnny Steichen, the team will focus on the fundamentals and expect to have a solid season.
Track and Field:
Senior Brian Stubbs Jr., a Tri-County All-Star this past winter in indoor track and field, takes his athleticism outside this spring. He will compete in the high jump along with several other events for head coach Mr. Vin Catano. Coach Catano expects numerous underclassmen to step up and seize opportunities this year after the graduation of several key seniors from last year’s team.
Volleyball:
Attitude and communication will be thefocus of the team this year. Under the leadership of new head coaches Mr. Greg Hartman and Ms. Sheila Hufnagle, the team will try to play with a heightened sense of energy. Senior captains Matt McLaughlin and John Costello, two all-around players, have pulled this team together in the weeks leading up to the regular season. Their charisma and hard work have shown the younger guys the ropes. This team’s biggest strengths are their community and brotherhood.
Look for this team to turn some heads this season as they try to put their best foot forward every game.
