Welcome to the 100 Club; CM Joins Prestigious National Speech and Debate Association Club

CM's speech and debate team joined the National Speech & Debate Association's prestigious 100 Club.
West Roxbury, Mass.—The National Speech & Debate Association granted Catholic Memorial School’s speech and debate team membership into its prestigious 100 Club last week. CM earned membership into the club after accumulating over 100 degrees last year, ranking the school within the top 20 percent of all speech and debate teams across the country.

“The sheer size of our program—66 students at this point— contributed to this honor,” said Brother Anthony K Cavet, the team’s head coach.

"Even more important is that our speakers and debaters love what they are doing and that their work has merged with their play.”

A school's program earns a degree whenever participants accumulate points from interscholastic competition, public speaking events, and service activities. Degrees range from Degrees of Merit to Degrees of Premier Distinction. Participants who record 25 points or more earn Degrees of Merit while participants who record 1,500 points or more earn Degrees of Premier Distinction.

A letter from Mr. J. Scott Wunn, the Executive Director of the National Speech & Debate Associate, informed Brother Cavet of the honor.

“The hard work you have invested to achieve this distinction will pay dividends for years to come,” wrote Mr. Wunn.

"I encourage you to build upon this momentum to ensure that even more students are empowered to become engaged citizens, skilled professionals, and honorable leaders in our global community.”

Membership into the 100 Club adds another accolade to an already long list of accomplishments for the CM speech and debate team.

After winning back-to-back state championships, CM speech and debate began its 2018-2019 with a team-record finish at the Yale Invitational Tournament in early September. They placed seventh out of the 217 schools invited to the prestigious tournament.

In their next event, the CM forensics team competes at the Dighton Rehoboth Festival of Imagination tournament on October 27th.
