New Haven, Conn.— For the first time in school history, the Catholic Memorial School forensics team placed among the top 10 teams at the annual Yale Invitational Tournament last Saturday.

The team finished seventh out of the 217 schools invited to the prestigious forensics tournament, an impressive season debut after winning back-to-back state championships.

"It was great seeing every one of our boys prepared for the weekend,” said senior Jacob Azzi, a co-captain of the team.

“But what made it even better was seeing them compete against the nation’s finest performers and being recognized for their talent.”

Three CM students advanced to the final round of their respective categories. Senior Ben Chipman finished in fourth place during the Oral Interpretation final while the Gadsden twins, juniors Darius and Marcus, took home sixth place honors in the Duo Interpretation final.

An additional four CM students advanced to the semifinals in their individual events. Senior Michael Martins and sophomore Nicholas Olwell made it to the Oral Interpretation semifinals alongside Ben Chipman. Meanwhile, Jacob Azzi and fellow senior co-captain Brendan Julian advanced to the Dramatic Interpretation semifinals.

Senior Michael McCarthy advanced to the Extemporaneous Speaking quarterfinals and senior Will Dashe earned a best delegate award in Congress.

For the third year in a row we can say that we have the strongest team in the school’s history, said Brother Anthony K Cavet, the team’s head coach.

“As long as we continue to have fun and treat each other with care and respect, all the hard work will continue to be worth it.”

In their next event, the CM forensics team competes at the Dighton Rehoboth Festival of Imagination tournament on October 27th.
