WEST ROXBURY, Mass.— Despite a slow start, the Catholic Memorial football team (2-0) quickly got back to their winning ways on Friday night in their 42-26 victory over La Salle Academy of Rhode Island (0-2). But they were not the only team to enjoy success.

Before the game, CM honored its cross-country program, with team members ranging from the 1960s to present day, all together on the field. The runners helped unveil three new championship banners commemorating the cross-country team’s Eastern Mass. State titles of the 60s and 70s to be hung in Ronald S. Perry Gymnasium. The banners honor the team’s nine EMass championships in 14 years along with individual champions from that era.

On the gridiron, the Knights’ weapons on both sides of the ball proved too overpowering for the Rams, as CM pulled away in the second half. The chants and cheers of the Knights’ jam-packed student section grew louder and louder as the game went on. Catholic Memorial’s ability to put points on the scoreboard quickly showed why this team deserves to be ranked first in Massachusetts.

After only throwing four passes in Week 1, Junior quarterback, JC Petrongolo completed 13 of 22 passes, finding the end zone three times. Two of those went to Junior Jaedn Skeete, including a 5-yard score in the third quarter to put the Knights ahead 35-12. Junior Kole Osinubi also caught a 25-yard touchdown pass to give CM a two-possession lead at the end of the first half.

La Salle was able to answer CM’s passing game with success of their own. Quarterback Dean Varrichione was solid behind center, connecting with his receivers on 12 of his 26 throws. His three touchdown passes helped the team keep up with the faced-paced offense of the Knights. Varrichione got the Rams on the board in the first quarter with a 17-yard pass to Justin Benson and found Chase Gouvin for a 65-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to bring La Salle within two scores. Jameszell Lassister led the Rams' ground attack, pushing through for tough yards each time he ran the ball. Lassister ran it in from the three-yard line, condensing the Knights’ lead to two points.

However, the Knights’ ability to capitalize on turnovers pushed them over the edge in this game. An interception by Datrell Jones led to a Catholic Memorial touchdown to put the game out of reach for the Rams. Junior Carson Harwood forced and recovered a fumble on the last play of the first quarter. The Knights’ ensuing drive was capped by a 49-yard touchdown to Skeete to give them a 14-6 lead. A fumbled snap on a La Salle punt attempt led to a drive that started in the red zone. Two plays later, Jones waltzed into the endzone, ultimately putting any possibility of a Rams comeback to rest.

The Knights look to remain undefeated Friday night at Amherst-Pelham Regional High School.
