Christian Service

Ongoing Service Opportunities

Casserly House

Every Tuesday, students travel to the Casserly House in Roslindale to assist young children with their homework.  The Casserly House is owned and operated by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston. Each morning, adult immigrants from all over the world fill the bottom floor, anxious to learn English and working diligently alongside one another, the sisters, and volunteer tutors.  In the afternoon, school children attend an after-school homework program. Catholic Memorial students act as tutors and mentors to the students in the after school program.

Senior Service Program
Called to imitate Christ’s radical love for the poor and marginalized, our seniors, like the Christian Brothers themselves, are asked to dedicate some of their time to addressing a social need in the Greater Boston area.  Our sites include:  feeding programs, schools, hospitals, shelters, social-justice agencies, advocacy groups, nursing homes, etc. Each fall and winter, seniors must select a SSP site, do all preliminary paper work and interviews, and commit to effective community service at that site for a period of 8 weeks. Seniors who carry out their responsibilities and who complete a Senior Service journal are recommended for graduation. Please contact the Service Coordinator Andrew Malionek with questions at andrewmalionek@catholicmemorial.org or by phone 617-469-8070.

Service Opportunities for Students, Parents and Faculty

Many volunteer opportunites exist within the city of Boston for students, their parents and the rest of the CM Community. In addition to the site information found by clicking on the above link (Senior Service opportunities), parents and faculty members can also find volunteer information by visiting the web addresses of the following organizations:

International Service Opportunities

The International Mission of the Christian Brothers
Just as Edmund Rice tried to lift the Irish from abject poverty through education, the Christian Brothers Missions are engaged in fighting poverty in some of the poorest places in the world. Throughout the year, Catholic Memorial students, faculty, and staff collect money to support these missions.  The money collected helps to fund schools that the Christian Brothers run for children in both
Peru and Brownsville, Texas and helps to buy school supplies, basic over the counter medications, and food.

Brother Edmund Rice Solidarity Initiative (BERSI)
Through our Brother Edmund Rice Solidarity Initiative, students are also encouraged to participate in international immersion programs. Often times, students are able to meet the students and Christian Brothers who receive our donations. BERSI visits countries such as
Peru, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Korea, and China.

Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation, Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, N.A. and Edmund Rice International
Catholic Memorial is a member of the International Edmund Rice Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation network (JPIC) a network of schools and colleges dedicated to promoting social and ecological justice. Visit us at http://edmundriceinternational.org/jpic.

Seasonal Events and Drives
During particular times of the year, CM students come together to help those who are most desperate in our community, providing food, clothing and Christmas gifts to families in the greater Boston area.
