The Catholic Memorial Challenge

In 2005, after a personal experience with breast cancer, Mark McNally, then a sophomore at Catholic Memorial School, approached the school's director of Campus Ministry Shivonne St. George and had a conversation about what he could do to help.  The result of the coversation was a massive grass-roots effort.  Mark established a modest team of CM walkers by working with the American Cancer Society to bring a breast cancer survivor to the school to speak with students.  He developed a web page where students, parents, faculty and friends could get information on breast cancer and track the progress of CM as it reached its fundraising goals.

By the 2007 Making Strides walk, more than 250 CM students climbed aboard six buses and headed for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, where their collective efforts resulted in contributions of more than $17,000.  The Making Strides walk has become Catholic Memorial's largest single-day Campus Ministry event each year.

"Mark's sense of compassion and his understanding of servant leadership are exemplary," said director of Campus Ministry Brian Scott.  "At the opening meeting for the walk last year, held at the State Room in Boston, people approached him as if he were royalty!"

Inspired by Mark's efforts, CM students rose to the occasion in 2008, the 4th year of Catholic Memorial School's overwhelming participation in the event.  Described as a "sea of red" along the Charles River, the more than 300 students far eclipsed the number of walkers on any single school or college team in Massachusetts.

And motivated by a desire to see just as many students from other area schools out there in 2009, Catholic Memorial School has issued the Catholic Memorial High School Challenge.  CM is challenging other schools in the area to form a team for Boston's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and challenge their schools to have at least 20% participation.

"Catholic Memorial School students benefit by this experience of solidarity with a cause that afflicts so many women but affects us all," said CM president Paul E. Sheff '62.  "We encourage all Massachusetts schools to join in this collective effort with us."
