Boston roots......Global vision

CM’s curriculum and programs continue to grow to embrace the school's vision: Global Education and Public Speaking.  One program that exemplifies this is the Model U.N. team.  About thirty CM students comprise the team, under the direction of history teacher Vin Bradley.  The Model United Nations program for secondary schools is designed to help students develop creative problem solving skills, improve interpersonal communications, and master complex issues.  It also exposes students to international affairs and allows them to view the world from a countries point of view.  So far this year, CM attended two competitions, at St. John’s Shrewsbury and St. John’s Prep with nearly 400 students participating at each one from all over New England.

To prepare for the competition, Coach Bradley assigns each student a different country.  Once they are assigned, the student delegates research their individual country, gathering facts, figures, and information on where their assigned country stands on certain issues.  At the competition, the delegates are assigned to a committee, learn parliamentary procedures and pass U.N. resolutions.  The students work together within Parliamentary procedure and time limits to represent an assigned nation's interests.

CM sophomore Gus Erikson was named an Outstanding Delegate at the St. John’s Prep competition in December.  Other competitions are planned for the spring at BC High and Concord Academy.

How You Can Help

The Model UN Team is just one example of Catholic Memorial’s vision at work, a vision that is focused on global education and public speaking.  By partnering with us through your support for the Annual Fund, CM can offer more programs and opportunities that enhance the Catholic Memorial experience and strengthen our vision.

Here’s what students had to say:

“The Model U.N. at CM has come a long way in a short amount of time.  It is will only get better.  There is no limit to what we can accomplish.”

Gus Erikson ‘13
Dover

“Our Model U.N. team is young but has the potential to be a renowned program at CM.  It opens opportunities to meet people and helps the members grow and understand other countries. It can be just as good as the speech team.”

Ronald Claude ‘12
Dedham

“This is a great program.  It helps you with life skills by being able to present your research and have group discussions.  It allows us a great opportunity to compete with other schools.  The Model UN program is fun and enjoyable.”

John Gaffney ‘11
West Roxbury

“The Model UN is a good educational experience for the boys because it teaches them teamwork, negotiation skills, leadership and public speaking.  They get a better understanding of global issues because they are seeing these issues through the eyes of a different country.   My plan is to expand the program so we can compete in some of the best local competitions such as the Harvard Model UN and DartMUN (Dartmouth College Model United Nations).”

Great opportunites like these would not be possible for these young men without your investment.   The experience of living and learning at CM is an intense and rewarding one, but the cost of that experience cannot be sustained by tuition alone. The qualities that make CM an exceptional place of learning are the direct result of generous giving each year from alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents and friends of the school.

CM's various gift vehicles and giving opportunities fall under these general areas:

  • Annual Giving Fund, which supports 10 percent of the operating budget
  • Endowed funds which help cover the cost of financial aid or specific programs
  • Planned, or deferred gifts, which generate income for the donor or other beneficiary while also supporting CM.
