Spring Track

Along with cross country and indoor track, the spring track and field team has a storied tradition at CM.

Led by Coaches Howard Spence and Brother Barry who started the team in the late 1950s, it quickly grew into a forum for great athletes.  By the late 1960s, CM track was sending top runners on to BostonCollege, one of the elite track programs in the country.  Coach Tom Meagher, who would start his track coaching career at CM before heading to BC to lead its track team, picked up where Brother Murphy and Brother Conway, two of the CM track coaches through the 1960s, left off.

When Coach Vin Catano began his career in the spring of 1975 by taking the reigns from Brother McGibney, he had one of the greatest runners in his tenure at CM on his hands--Billy Martin.  A Charlestown native with a tough but winning attitude, Martin would go on to run the best ½ mile in New Englands, then win the 1975 equivalent of Nationals—the Golden West Meet in California at the end of his senior year in 1975 with a time of 1:51.

Later, in 1985, senior Mark Foley would set a mark that hundreds after him have tried to surpass when he set the school record in the 2-mile event with a time of 9:04.

As a team, the spring track team has achieved runner-up recognition at both the state level and all-state level, though a state championship title has eluded them.
