2009 Schedule

CM Rugby came away with the 3rd place trophy in Division IIA at the New England Rugby Football Union Tournament in NH on May 9.  The whole division was comprised of 24 teams throughout New England.

CM went into the first match against Amoskeag (NH) and quickly scored a penalty goal in the 1st half by Tom Byrne '11 to go up by 3 pts.  In the second half, CM continued to pressure and play aggressive defense.  A score was made by a quick run around the ruck by team captain Jim Myers '09.  Byrne converted and CM won, 8-0.

The second match was against rival Brookline.  CM defeated Brookline for the NERFU Cup last year. Brookline was quick to get on the board with 2 tries by the back line.  Additionally, their large and fast #8 dominated the field.  Brookline proved to on its game and came out on top, 18 - 0.

The third match was for the 3rd place finish against Marshfield.  Even though CM lost to them in the regular season, every CM player worked harder at the tournament.  Pat Costello '09 made a break through the back line at the mid-field line and scored a try.  Tom Byrne converted to put CM up 7-0 at halftime.  In the second half, Marshfield had a major penalty which allowed Byrne to kick a penalty goal for another 3 pts. Marshfield was able to make one score late in the match (although they didn't convert) and CM took home a 3rd place trophy with a 10-0 win.

A Side

Saturday     03/28/09     Arlington Catholic High School     Home     W 26-12
CM went up early in the first period with two tries, one by Kurt Buszcynski '09 and one by Jim Meyers '09.  Tom Byrne '11 converted one try.  After AC fought back in the 2nd half, CM came on with a burst and scored two more tries by Byrne and Joe Connelly '09.  Byrne converted both to bring the final score to 26-12.  A great win to start off the season for a very strong, and enthusiastic squad.

Friday     04/03/09     Brookline High School     Away     T 0-0
In a rainy and somewhat sloppy match against NERFU Division II finals opponents from 2008, CM held strong.  It was a continuous rucking match with very tough defensive play throughout.  The ball was moved to either end of the field by both teams, although neither one could score over the goal line.  Brookline got it over the line twice but due to tough and quick thinking defensive tackling by CM could not touch it down to score a try.  Poor light thwarted the last two minutes of the second half and the B-side match, but it was a great physical effort by CM.
