Excellence in Coaching: AHCA Honors Hanson, Parker
On Saturday evening, April 25, the American Hockey Coaches Association honored Catholic Memorial School hockey coach Bill Hanson with the John Mariucci Award. The Award, instituted in 1988, honors a secondary school association coach who best exemplifies the spirit, dedication and enthusiasm of the "Godfather of U.S. Hockey," John Mariucci.
Along with Hanson, Boston University coach Jack Parker '64 was honored as the Men's Division I Coach of the Year at the annual banquet, held at the Naples Beach Hotel. Parker, along with assistant Mike Bavis '88, led the Terriers to their 5th National Championship in a dramatic finish on April 11.

Coach Hanson, pictured above, thanked the AHCA and the delegation from CM that joined him, which included his wife Lynn, Ed '61 and Nancy McElaney, Fr. Jack Costello, and CM Athletic Director Alex Campea.
"My beginning in hockey was in South Boston, as a young kid digging hockey pucks out of the net for John Cunniff in the Greyhound Bus Terminal on East 2nd St.," Hanson remarked. "He became a right wing All-American at BC. I learned to play from one of the best. And from those humble beginnings, playing on Castle Island and in Columbia Park...to winning the Mariucci Award. My background was a lot like John Mariucci's--but his was the black ice of Minnesota."
"This is a well-deserved honor for Coach Hanson and all the success he's had in all his years," said Alex Campea. "With seventeen state championships and over 500 wins, it's safe to say he's contributed mightily to high school hockey in Massachusetts, producing quality student-athletes in his time here."

The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) has named Catholic Memorial School guidance counselor and head hockey coach William Hanson the recipient of the 2009 John Mariucci Award.
The award, named after former Minnesota player and coach John Mariucci, was created to honor a secondary school coach "who best exemplifies the spirit, dedication, and enthusiasm of the 'Godfather of U.S. Hockey,' John Mariucci."
