Middle School Athletics

The Middle School athletic program offers a wide array of after school sports in the fall, winter and spring seasons that are developmental in nature.  Athletics is one of many ways a student can express his true, realized or unrealized potential.  Each sport is open for all students in grades seven and eight to pursue.  Our goal prior to each season is to encourage our young students to tryout for all sports to test his abilities.  The goal of the faculty is to emphasize the importance of involvement in sports as a means to assist each student in discovering his strengths and skills.   We also understand the importance of finding a place for our students on a team despite level of ability.  Athletics have shown to have a correlation to our students' confidence, changing their approach toward studies and sense of belonging to the community.

The Middle School Soccer program is a "no-cut" program that takes an average of 30  seventh and eighth graders and makes two equal teams, the Silver and the Red.  Coached by John Tassinari, the soccer team is competitive with local teams from the Newton schools, Independent schools like St. Sebastian's and Belmont Hill, and Catholic Conference rival BC High.  This year, the team got off to a good start by beating Dexter 3-0 and they look forward to a promising rest of the season.

In the area of track, we have several talented, future prospects who participate and form the cross-country team.  “They will be competitive in the Catholic Conference and within the state as it is one of the strongest young teams I've seen in ten years," says Coach Smith.  The team competed this year in the 49th annual Catholic Memorial Invitational at Franklin Park.

The Middle School football program coached by Mr. Boyle includes anywhere from forty to fifty student-athletes yearly.  The team has improved over the years and has been the first football experience for many students who are now on varsity teams.  With a 6-2 record last year, “the team enjoyed the most successful season to date,” according to Mr. Boyle, with hope of continuing its growth and improvement.

The swimming program, also coached by Mr. Boyle and Mr. Murray, has grown in numbers over the past five years through the participation of the "Mid-Knights."  Of the thirty-five members, 28 began at the Middle School level and have become the captains and nucleus of a presently competitive team.

Another program enjoying success and growth in recent years is the Mid Knight baseball program coached as well by Mr. Boyle and Mr. Murray, under the guidance of Mr. Cormier, the Head Teacher of the Middle School, and Athletic Director Mr. Campea.  The baseball program has become more inclusive, consisting of four teams and sixty players as opposed to the two teams and 28 players.  Following the example of the hockey program, it is an intramural league on the weekends and, from those games, a different team is selected to represent CM at the weekly travel games.  Choosing a different team each week allows more opportunity for the students to participate.

The Middle School hockey team, under the direction of Mrs. Eberly (affectionately known as "the commissioner"), had an impressive season last year and looks to duplicate its success again this winter.  Coach Consigli, father of David '12, developed a hard- hitting, hustling and scoring team.  They were able to defeat a more mature freshman team in last season’s yearly contest--not an easy accomplishment!

CM's Middle School athletes go on to compete at the varsity level in all sports at the High School.  Having showcased their talents and developed their skills in agility, endurance and teamwork as seventh and eighth graders, they continue to develop and grow as they bring pride to both team and school.
