Cross Country

The Catholic Memorial Cross Country team earned its position at the top of the Catholic Conference early in CM history, capturing its first Eastern Massachusetts State Championship in 1965 under head coach Brother William Murphy.  Others followed in 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1974.  In 1968, Coach Tommy Meagher led the team before heading to Boston College to coach track there.  Garrett McGibney assumed coaching duties through 1975, when famed CM runner from Charlestown Billy Martin earned top marks for the Knights.  In 1972, Coach Vincent Catano began coaching the freshmen and JV teams, and in the winter of 1975 took over as head coach of the track team for his first season.

As of Spring 2008, Coach Catano has since coached for a record 101 consecutive seasons.  In the spring of 2007, he was inducted into the Massachusetts Track and Field Coaches’ Hall of Fame.

Catano’s era has fostered a number of top state and national runners.  In, 1983 a strong squad led by George Grant returned the Eastern Mass Championship to CM after earning an All-State title in 1982.

In 1988, Catholic Conference phenom John Finn earned a state title for the Knights, and went on to compete in Nationals, winning CM's first All-American title in the sport.  Though a state title has since eluded the team, it earned a Catholic Conference Championship in 2006 with outstanding meet performances by Paul Corcoran, Matthew Dewey, and John Moriarity.

Every fall since 1960, the Catholic Memorial Invitational or "CMI" has hosted top schools from conferences across New England and the nation.  The first CMI, organized by head coach Brother Aloysius J. Barry, drew only ten area schools.  By 1966, over 1,100 runners were competing in two divisions.  And by the 1970s, however, it had become a mainstay on every interscholastic runner's schedule on the third Saturday of October.  In 2007, over five hundred runners competed in Division I and II races at the CMI.
