Vince in Bono Malum Award: Nominations

In the spring of 2009, Catholic Memorial established an award to recognize notable achievement among its alumni.   This recognition is seen as rooted in the school’s motto, Vince In Bono Malum, “Conquer Evil by Doing Good” and as witness to a life of accomplishment and service.  This award is the highest honor Catholic Memorial bestows on its graduates.

The award will be made in three categories:

For Distinguished Professional Achievement.   The award recipient should be recognized by Catholic Memorial alumni and by colleagues within their professional sphere as having attained a high level of professional accomplishment.  Their careers should be marked by hard work and an abiding commitment to integrity.

For Outstanding Service to Community.  The recipients should be recognized by Catholic Memorial alumni and by colleagues within their professional sphere as having a deep commitment to the service and welfare of humanity in their community in which they live or work or to Catholic Memorial School.   Of particular interest is the degree to which the recipient’s service reflects favorably on what a Catholic Memorial education accomplishes.

To An Outstanding Young Alumnus.  The recipient will be 15 years or less from graduation from CM.  Their accomplishments, whether professionally and/or in the area of community service, should be seen as noteworthy even at a relatively young age.

Eligibility is determined by the following factors:

  • Except for extraordinary reasons, candidates must be graduates of Catholic Memorial School (“alumni”).
  • Members of the board of directors are not eligible until having remained off the board for at least three years.
  • Members of the school’s faculty and administration are not eligible while continuing to be employed by Catholic Memorial.

The process of progressing from nomination to election is as follows:

  • In the spring alumni will be asked to submit names for nomination.
  • All nominations will be reviewed by a panel of alumni, Catholic Memorial faculty and administration.  The panel will be chaired by the president of Catholic Memorial.
  • Before candidates for nomination are officially designated award winners, each will be asked whether he would accept the award, and whether he would agree to attend a dinner in the fall when he will be officially recognized.  Attendance at the dinner is required.
  • The award may be granted to an individual posthumously.
  • The recipients will be announced in the summer.
  • At the fall recognition dinner, recipients will be officially inducted into Vince in Bono Malum and presented with a crystal signifying this great honor.

Anyone from the Catholic Memorial community is welcome to submit nominations of eligible alumni for the Vince in Bono Malum Award.  Nominations should be in the form of a letter stating the candidate's credentials and the reason for nominating the individual to the appropriate category.  Please mail nominations to the Alumni Office, Catholic Memorial School, 235 Baker St., West Roxbury MA or email Alumni@CatholicMemorial.org.  Nomination deadline: June 1.
