Lt. Paul Pender responded to a fire on Harrison Street in Brookline in April 2008 just as he did any other fire in the line of duty. This one, however, would threaten the lives of tow of his colleagues. When one of them – Stephen Nelson – was pinned on the second floor of the house after an unexpected explosion, Pender, risking his own life, joined fellow firefighter Frederick Johnston in rushing to the aid of his colleague.
All four men were treated for second-degree burns, but all survived thanks to the courageous efforts of Pender. In recognition of his selfless and courageous acts, the Brookline Fire Department awarded Pender with the Medal of Valor, Governor Patrick awarded him with Firefighter of the Year and state Medal of Valor honors, and Vice President Joe Biden honored him at the White House in September 2010 with the U.S. Medal of Valor.
