Lt. Col. Michael Donahue ‘88
Military Assistant and speechwriter for the Secretary of the Army





Lt. Col. Donahue received an appointment to West Point in 1988 and studied there for a bachelor’s degree in French. Upon commissioning, Donahue worked as a lieutenant in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, assuming positions of increasing responsibility before being deployed to Kosovo in Operation Allied Force.

In 2003, Donahue was deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he served as a senior division liaison in Kurdistan. He returned to Iraq in 2005 as a brigade logistics officer for the 4th Infantry Division. There, he integrated operations for the Commander’s counterinsurgency objectives before becoming a battalion operations officer for the 3rd Battalion’s 16th Field Artillery. In cooperation with Iraqi Security Forces, Donahue and his team ensured continuous security of the Imam Ali Shrine and the Grand Ayatollah Sistani.

In his last two years in Iraq, Donahue was the Division Chief of Targeting for the 4th Infantry. During this tour, Donahue was blessed with a USO visit by Red Sox ace Curt Schilling, for whom he served as personal escort.

On returning stateside, Donahue became special assistant and speechwriter to General George W. Casey, Jr. and General Martin Dempsey, Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. Army. He currently serves as assistant and speechwriter for the Secretary of the Army, the Honorable John McHugh.
