All of our Middle School teachers, over the years, have helped to foster an inviting but challenging academic environment at Catholic Memorial, grounded in a supportive community of faith. The most important part of the vision for the Middle School Program was formed fifteen years ago: to create a caring community where students, teachers and parents come together to help develop Christian gentlemen to be leaders in the greater community.
The vision for the Middle School was that of the first president of Catholic Memorial School, Brother E. John Sheehan, along with Principal Anthony T. Polito. For many years preceding the opening of the Middle School, many parents asked if CM could offer a seventh and eight grade program for their sons. After much deliberation and collaboration with the Archdiocese of Boston, the decision was made to create the first Catholic Middle School program in metropolitan Boston.
Donahue Hall was originally built as a Boston Public School in 1899—the Henry Vane Elementary School. St. Theresa’s Parish purchased the school in the 1950’s and used it as an annex to their parochial school until Monsignor Charles Donahue (Pastor of St. Theresa’s) donated it to the Christian Brothers. The Brothers opened Catholic Memorial High School in Donahue Hall in 1957. After a new building was constructed across the street, Donahue Hall was used primarily for freshmen classrooms throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Over the years, I have spoken to several alumni (many of them who have sent their sons to CM) who have fond memories of Donahue Hall and Br. Al Heeran, their freshmen counselor.
We are fortunate to have Donahue Hall with its storied history of educating elementary and high school students. We started the Middle School Program with a clear vision of what lifelong learning skills our students needed in an ever-changing society combined with our Catholic faith. With a dedicated group of outstanding teachers who have taught in the Middle School over the past fifteen years, we have truly created a community of learners where students are challenged to excel in a myriad of ways. Whether it be academically, spiritually, or athletically, our students have found inner gifts that many of them were unaware of before they arrived at CM.
