Middle School Social Studies

Mr. Smith - Social Studies

The 7th grade program is introduced with a comprehensive study of geography as a foundation for understanding contemporary problems and issues, and the relationship of geography to culture. In-depth studies of primitive, agrarian, industrial, and post-industrial societies afford students the opportunities to examine representative cultures and societies.

The 8th grade program concentrates on the study of civics. The study of federal, state, and local governments is tied to an appreciation of American history with emphasis on the theme of "conflict and resolution." Other themes focus on citizenship, the "separation of powers," and the role of the individual in society. Library work and research is coordinated with the Language Arts teachers and the librarian.
