Middle School Science
The Science Department of Catholic Memorial is committed to the belief that every student is capable of mastering the scientific skills and concepts necessary for a well-rounded college preparatory education. Furthermore, the department is convinced that, given science and technology’s rapid growth and increasing importance in today’s world, a solid grounding in scientific study has never been more essential.

The 7th and 8th grade program, Integrated Science I and II, is a comprehensive, inquiry-based introduction to the fundamental concepts of life, environmental, physical, and earth & space sciences. An organized and analytical approach to problem-solving, grounded in the scientific method, exposes students to the wonder and usefulness of critical observation.

| Mr. Murray |
This course of study builds progressively on the fundamentals mastered in 7th grade so that by 8th grade a more defined focus on life processes, matter, and energy can be pursued. By the end of this two-year program, students are well-prepared for the study of physical science, biology, chemistry, and physics in high school.
The Middle School science program uses hands-on experiments, concrete demonstrations, and creative projects to stimulate the natural curiosity of its students. Students are required to keep a lab journal and write weekly laboratory reports. These reports help to strengthen their understanding of the scientific method and stress that learning to communicate your results in science is very important. The use of technology is ingrained in the study of science. Students are asked to create Powerpoint presentations, computer generated graphs, data tables, and typed reports as part of their science class. Information is relayed by both teacher and students via in class SMART boards. Computer usage is encouraged on a daily basis in science. In all of these endeavors, students gain a greater appreciation for the integral role of science and technology in their daily lives.
