All of the young men attending Catholic Memorial School have the wonderful opportunity to study Latin, French, Spanish or Mandarin Chinese during their Grade 7 and 8 experience. This will allow them to make a smooth transition into level 2 of any language at the High School.  Here at Catholic Memorial, all students are required to successfully complete the third level of a World Language prior to graduation; however, many of the boys who began their World Language study in Donahue Hall have gone on to complete the Advanced Placement level of the course in the High School.

The study of Latin in Middle School has proven to be a very effective and engaging way to teach young learners.  Through the study of Latin grammar, combined with attention to translation skills, students have been successful in strengthening their basic English skills in vocabulary and reading comprehension. rammar focus has also led to greatly improved English writing and communication and has encouraged critical thinking and comparative analysis.  In addition to the study of the Latin language itself, students have explored the rich history, art and culture of the Romans, thus increasing cultural awareness.  All of the young men enrolled in the Latin program at Catholic Memorial take the National Latin Exam in the spring; those in the Middle School always look forward to Awards night when they receive the “special handshake” from Mr. Tobin for a job well done.

The focus of the modern language program in the Middle School (French, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese) is to develop competency in communication and proficiency in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The cultures of each language's regions are explored, providing students with a vaster perspective on their world and an appreciation for the history, literature and art of these language's cultures.

Fifteen years after its founding, CatholicMemorial Middle School continues to give its students access to the most widely spoken foreign languages in the world after English.  And year after year, entering 7th graders continue to show an eagerness and enthusiasm for learning and speaking these new languages.
