Middle School Language Arts

Mrs. Murphy - Language Arts

The Language Arts program at the 7th and 8th grade level focuses on tasks which help students acquire and integrate process skills needed to show proficiencies in the following communication areas:

1) Thinking critically and creatively (CCT);
2) Independent Reading & Literature Appreciation and Analysis;
3) Writing for various purposes and audiences;
4) Listening, Public Speaking, Hospitality + School Spirit skills;
5) Language Skills: grammar, usage, vocabulary, spelling;
6) Communicating on-line in positive and productive ways.

Grade 7:

At this level the English/Language Arts program establishes a strong focus on the skills necessary in order to read, write and process curriculum for all disciplines. A strong emphasis is placed on the strengthening and advancement of grammar and writing in order to promote correct usage when writing in today’s world of technology. All students are expected to write often, read daily, think critically, and to learn how to make connections between literary themes and the global world surrounding them.

Grade 7 English Texts:

    * Prentice Hall (PH) Penguin 7 Literature
    * PH Grammar & Composition 7 Exercise Workbook
    * PH Grammar & Composition 8 (two-year text)
    * Other selected literary works and resources.

Grade 8

Mrs. Eberly - Language Arts

In Grade 8 students focus on the concept of author’s purpose and that of audiences beyond their classroom walls. They receive directed instruction in oral and written expression; literary resources; and thinking skills such as inquiry, analysis, planning, implementation, and revision. They practice note taking, research, documentation, and word processing skills. Students practice Higher Order Thinking (H.O.T.) strategies as they continue their journey to become positive and productive life-long, independent tech savvy learners, as well as, caring citizens of the 21st Century!
