A Partnership from the Beginning:  The Faulkner Hospital and Catholic Memorial Middle School

Since serving the health care needs of the community involves more than just physical care for medical needs, Faulkner Hospital has an extensive school partnership program.  The program is designed to help enrich the students’ curriculum, encourage early awareness of how to foster good health and help students deal with outside factors that may interfere with their health.

Faulkner is committed to achieving the goals of the school partnership, which include fostering a sense of community-wide responsibility for the education of youth, providing programming, meeting identified student and teacher needs, supporting the larger school community and serving as a resource.

Faulkner Hospital has had a formal health partnership with Catholic Memorial Middle School since the Middle School opened in 1993.  In fact, Mrs. Karen Janesy, Community Relations Director at the Faulkner in 1993, was on the Middle School Planning Committee.  Over the past fifteen years, the hospital has provided CM students with health education programs that would not otherwise be available due to limited resources and lack of full-time health education teachers at the school.  Students are educated about various health and wellness topics, including nutrition, drug education, CPR, first aid training, sports injury prevention education and healthcare career panels.

“The partnership with Catholic Memorial has certainly enriched the work experience for many Faulkner Hospital employees,” says Tracy Sylven, Director of Community Health and Benefits.  “If this program didn’t exist, many of the people who participate wouldn’t have this opportunity to reach out to the next generation of professionals.”

Faulkner Hospital is a community teaching hospital located in southwest Boston.  Founded in 1900, Faulkner Hospital offers comprehensive medical, surgical and psychiatric care, as well as complete emergency, ambulatory and diagnostic services.  For more information about Faulkner Hospital and its programs, visit www.faulknerhospital.org.
